A Q-Link is an assignable real-time control (a knob, slider, or touch strip) on Akai MPC hardware that can be mapped to almost any parameter for hands-on tweaking.

Example

Map a Q-Link knob to a filter cutoff and you can sweep a sample's brightness live while a beat plays. Map another to sample start point and you can stutter a loop by hand. The term has become shorthand for any assignable performance control on a groovebox.

Why it matters

Mouse automation is precise but lifeless. Assignable controls like Q-Links let you perform parameter changes with the same expressive timing you bring to the pads, so filter sweeps, volume rides, and effect throws feel played rather than drawn. They turn editing into performance.

How to play or configure

Enter your device's assign or learn mode, touch the control, then touch the parameter you want it to drive. Set sensible minimum and maximum limits so a full sweep stays musical. Save the assignment with the project so it recalls later. Practise riding one control while keeping a groove going on the pads; the goal is to control and play at the same time.
